1. Scope

1.1

The requirements of this Standard apply to all punch press and brake press installations and operations.

1.2

This Standard covers the occupational health and safety requirem ents for all classes of power punch presses and brake presses which are fitted with a ram (plunger or slide) and dies for the purpose of blanking, cutting, trimming, drawing, punching, forming (bending), stamping or assembling metal or other materials.

1.3

This Standard sets forth general health and safety requirements for punch presses and brake presses and details safety requirements in danger zones around the point of operation.

1.4

Special or additional guarding or other protection may be required where the devices and principles prescribed in this Standard are not directly applicable; including but not limited to machines including bulldozers and hot-forging metal presses.

(See CSA Standard CAN/CSA-Z615, Code for Hot Forging Producers, Health and Safety Requirements.)

1.5

For the purposes of this Standard a ""cold"" material is any material that can be handled with gloved hands. ""Warm"" material is material with an upper processing temperature of 760?C (1400?F), handled by means of appropriate tongs or other such devices. Any material whose temperature during processing exceeds 760?C (1400?F) is associated with the metal-forging industry and is outside of the scope of this Standard.

(See CSA Standard Z615.)

1.6

Any device used or incorporated as a safety device must be designed, manufactured, and supplied for that sole purpose.

1.7

The values given in SI(metric) units are the Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.
